Fat in your diet

The truth about fat in your diet

We are constantly surrounded by diet trends, new health fads, and ever-changing rules. Some say cut out carbs. Others say cut out fat.

It gets confusing fast.

While high fat diets like Banting and Keto have made eating fat more socially acceptable again, the idea that fat is something to avoid still lingers. Supermarkets are packed with fat-free products. Dairy comes in low fat, fat free, and double cream options. Even meat is trimmed leaner than ever before.

But here is the truth. Completely eliminating fat from your diet is not just unnecessary, it can be harmful.

Fat is an essential nutrient. Your body cannot function without it. Every single hormone in the body, including oestrogen and testosterone, relies on fat for its production. Your brain, your skin, your cells, your energy levels, all depend on it.

The goal is not to cut out fat. The goal is to choose the right kinds.

Understanding the good fats

Not all fats are equal. While it is wise to limit saturated fats from animal products, the unsaturated fats, especially Omega fatty acids, are absolutely vital.

Omega 3 and Omega 6 are two essential fatty acids that support hormone health, reduce inflammation, and keep your skin and body functioning optimally.

Omega 3 is the star player. It is found in oily fish like salmon, sardines, mackerel, herring, and anchovies. You will also find it in walnuts, chia seeds, and flaxseeds. These fats help treat inflammatory skin conditions like eczema and acne and are often lacking in modern diets.

Omega 6 comes from seed oils like sunflower and canola. It also plays a valuable role but tends to be far more abundant in the foods we already eat.

The recommended intake ratio is two parts Omega 3 to one part Omega 6. In reality, most people have the opposite, too much Omega 6 and too little Omega 3.

So what should you do?

Focus on increasing your intake of good fats, especially Omega 3. Eat more oily fish if you can, or include a high quality Omega 3 supplement. If you are not a fan of fish, capsules from your pharmacy are a great solution.

Fat is not the enemy. It is one of the most powerful nutrients you can give your body, and your skin will thank you for it.
